Major General Thomas Waverly

Recognize the name? He makes regular appearances at our home each Christmas season. General Waverly is the lovable retired Army leader in Berlin’s White Christmas starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. Waverly was played by Dean Jagger who was born not far across the border in northern Ohio and spent growing up years about ten miles from here. He attended Wabash College. Connections such as these make a film more engaging.

When does the Christmas season begin for you? There are dates on our calendar that require calculations. As example, Easter is based on phases of the moon, the date for Thanksgiving can change but the day is always the fourth Thursday of November. Election Day is the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. For me, while the date for Christmas is always the 25th, the start of the Christmas season is a person thing. For me it is determined by the first showing of White Christmas after the second Advent candle is lit. Black Friday shopping day is long past, economists have determined the economic strength of the consumer this season, and people are beginning to boast about having their shopping complete. Now it’s time for the heart of Christmas.

I hope you have opportunity to take in the film with its memorable songs including The Best Things Happen When You’re Dancing and Count Your Blessing Instead of Sheep and of course, White Christmas. Danny Kaye’s dance scenes are memorable.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
